Facilities

The Evolutionary Venomics Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for undertaking advanced research into various aspects of venomics.

The Main Lab

The main lab at EVL is fully equipped to undertake research in biochemistry, molecular biology, proteomics, bioinformatics and omics.

The Fab Lab

The Fab lab is dedicated to research on antibody discovery, engineering and expression. This part of the lab is fully equipped to discover toxin-specific antibodies from the serum of animals immunised with snake venoms and recombinantly expressing them in mammalian cell lines.

The Herpetarium

Our herpetarium houses several species/populations of spiders, scorpions (50+ individuals) and centipedes from across India, as well as several species of tarantulas (23 individuals) from Mexico, Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago, and other parts of South America.

Antivenom Research and Development Centre

In collaboration with the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology and with financial support from the Government of Karnataka, EVL is establishing an Antivenom Research and Development Centre (AVRDC) in Bangalore. This facility, which is coming up in the electronic city on the IBAB campus, will house several species of snakes and other venomous organisms in their near-natural habitats. This facility will drive the development of effective antivenoms for treating snakebites in Karnataka and India. It will act as an incubation centre for start-ups pursuing biodiscovery research on venoms.

Equipment

Some of the major equipment in EVL include...

  • Mass spectrometer

  • Cell sorter

  • Thermocyclers: 3 dedicated for species phylogenetics + 3 for antibody discovery

  • RP-HPLC system

  • FPLC system

  • 2D-gel electrophoresis setup

  • Gel documentation system

  • Fluorescent plate reader
